The Surfing World REELERS 2016 Short Surf Film Awards were held on Friday 4th March at a pumping Sunkissed Bar & Lounge in Manly. The epic evening showcased the incredible talent from numerous up-and-coming and established filmmakers from all over the world who were invited to create a surf movie no longer than three minutes in length and submit it into one of three creative categories. It’s fair to say that the level of quality in this year’s entries was mind-blowing.
Editor of Surfing World Magazine, Vaughan Blakey said of the event. “There are worthy winners all over the place. This year’s entries were all-time. The whole experience was, again unbelievable. There are so many filmmakers out there, young and old, that are creating the surf films and representing a new generation, and it’s great to give them a place to showcase their talent in front of three pretty influential judges.”
Influential indeed. The judging was in the hands of the most creative surf movie titans of the past five decades– Taylor Steele, Kai Neville and Jack McCoy, who had the extremely hard task of picking the winners from a very tough bunch. For some entrants, it was simply the opportunity of having Taylor Steele, Kai Neville and Jack McCoy watching their movie. The opportunity of a lifetime!
The night itself was a full on ruckus. After the winners were announced, WASH the band took stage and turned the Sunkissed Lounge on it’s head. It’s fair to say things got pretty rowdy!
Congratulations to all of the finalist. However, there can only be one winner per category. It’s time to check out the winning films.
